OPTN Special Election Ratification Update

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) Board of Directors voted not to ratify the results of the OPTN special election on June 4, 2025. The voting results were 6 Approve; 18 Reject, and 8 Abstain.

In their deliberations prior to the vote, some Board members expressed several concerns, including the Board's limited involvement in the election, process transparency, under-representation of critical stakeholder groups, the presence of uncontested seats on the ballot, and that Board officers were not elected during the national election.

OPTN members voted on the final slate of candidates in two phases. Regional Councillor elections were held from May 2 to May 6, 2025 and National elections for the remaining Board seats took place from May 23 to June 2, 2025 – with 83% of OPTN members voting in the national election. The newly elected Board of Directors will begin their terms on July 1, 2025.
