OPTN predictive analytics launched to all kidney transplant programs

Published on: Thursday, January 26, 2023

A new enhancement to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) computer system took effect Jan. 18, 2023. Predictive analytics are now incorporated into the organ offer experience for adult deceased donor kidneys, and are available to every kidney transplant program in the United States. The decision support tool, now available when reviewing organ offers on mobile devices, is intended to increase organ utilization by reducing the number of kidneys that go unused. The predictive data is intended to supplement existing data or clinical judgement used by transplant programs to find the right organs for their patients. Education was launched to all kidney programs in December 2022.

The predictive analytics project supports the OPTN strategic goal to improve waitlisted patient, living donor and transplant recipient outcomes. An advisory panel will monitor safety and provide regular updates to the Board and committee stakeholders.
