Information regarding increase in worldwide cases of monkeypox

Published on: Friday, May 27, 2022

The recent occurrence of multiple cases of monkeypox in non-endemic nations bears vigilance for potential impacts upon organ donation and transplantation. Research has indicated a greater risk of mortality or severe complications among immunocompromised individuals.

The OPTN Ad Hoc Disease Transmission Advisory Committee (DTAC) is evaluating this situation as it develops and will provide clinical guidance as applicable. This statement from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers several recommendations for healthcare providers if they identify patients who may have been exposed to the disease.

As always, transplant programs and OPOs should utilize the OPTN Patient Safety Portal to report any known or suspected situation involving any potential donor-transmitted disease.

The committee will continue to provide updates and additional resource information as developments warrant.
