Advisory council formed for project to increase kidney utilization

A national advisory committee has been selected to guide the planning and implementation of the Collaborative Innovation and Improvement Network (COIIN), an OPTN pilot project to test potential improvements to review of transplant program performance.
The COIIN will test the value and practicality of moving from traditional criteria used by the OPTN/UNOS Membership and Professional Standards Committee to a more collaborative approach aimed at performance improvement and sharing of best practices. The project will enroll approximately 15 kidney transplant programs to participate in a structured and closely monitored quality improvement process, focused on supporting greater use of deceased donor kidneys calculated to have a moderate to high Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) score.
The council will advise on and approve the project’s design, deployment and evaluation. David Klassen, M.D., UNOS’ Chief Medical Officer, will chair the advisory council. Additional council members are as follows:

Staff of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Division of Transplantation, also serve as ex officio, nonvoting members of the council.
