Citing data

The transplant community is joined under a nationwide umbrella called the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) administers the OPTN under contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

UNOS continually strives to determine the extent to which OPTN data are used and made available to the public. To that end, UNOS requests copies of all published abstracts and manuscripts that use OPTN data. As an alternative to sending a copy, you may simply provide the following publication details via email:

• Manuscript author(s) and title
• Publication name, volume, number, pages, and date

Institutional review board(IRB) approval

If these data are to be used as part of a presentation or manuscript (including abstracts), you must check with your institution to see whether IRB approval (expedited or otherwise) is required.

Citing OPTN data

• When citing data from the Annual Report, please use the following example:
  2004 Annual Report of the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network and the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients: Transplant Data 1994-2003. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Healthcare Systems Bureau, Division of Transplantation, Rockville, MD; United Network for Organ Sharing, Richmond, VA; University Renal Research and Education Association, Ann Arbor, MI.
• When citing data or information found on the Web, not in a specific report, simply cite the date and source of the data which can usually be found beneath Web tables or at the bottom of a page. For example: Based on OPTN data as of January 1, 2008. It is not necessary to put a citation on the reference page or in the bibliography. It can be placed within the body of the text or graphic presentation.
• When citing the entire Web site, simply give the address of the site in the text. For example:
  The OPTN Web site offers a wealth of information about transplantation (http://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov).
• Additionally, please add the following statement as an acknowledgment: "This work was supported in part by Health Resources and Services Administration contract HHSH250-2019-00001C. The content is the responsibility of the authors alone and does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the Department of Health and Human Services, nor does mention of trade names, commercial products, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government."
