McBride appointed interim OPTN executive director

Maureen McBride, Ph.D., assumes the responsibility of interim OPTN Executive Director effective Oct. 1, 2022. She succeeds Brian Shepard, who had served as executive director since 2012.

Dr. McBride has served in a number of senior and executive leadership positions in her 27 years at UNOS, the OPTN contractor organization. Most recently she was its Chief Operating Officer. She earned a bachelor’s of science degree in mathematics from Loyola College in Maryland and a Ph.D. in biostatistics from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia.

“Dr. McBride has the know-how, the experience, the relationships and the integrity to lead the OPTN into an even brighter future,” says Jerry McCauley, M.D., President of the OPTN Board of Directors. “From her robust working relationship with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to her decades of experience, Dr. McBride is uniquely qualified to help lead the community during this unprecedented moment.”

The OPTN Board of Directors is conducting a national search for a permanent executive director.
